PCAHA Juvenile Canucks Strike Gold

RIDGE MEADOWS DISH

February 12, 2012

The Championship game of the 30th Annual PCAHA Juvenile Scholarship Tournament was held yesterday at Sungod Arena in North Delta, BC.

In what can only be described as 'thrilling', the Senators and Canucks played an epic hockey game resulting in a double overtime 4-3 win for the Canucks. The Canucks who had lost their last round robin game to the Senators came out hungry for 'revenge'. The equally hungry Senators kept the game fast paced with everyone sitting on the edge of their seats.

Outstanding goal tending by Senators #1 Brenden Vogt (Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey) and the tag team goalies  # 30 Jason Sidhu (Surrey Minor Hockey) and #1 Tyson Leblanc (Seafair Minor Hockey) for the Canucks.

Goals for the Senators:

  • #12 Brody Hemrich (Cloverdale Minor Hockey) with assist from #10 Braden Strelezki (Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey
  • #9 Mike Ward (Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey) with assist from #16 Jacob Wiebe (Cloverdale Minor Hockey)
  • #16 Jacob Wiebe (Cloverdale Minor Hockey) unassisted
Goals for the Canucks:

  • #3 Devon Whitter (Coquitlam Minor Hockey) assisted by # 19 David Kemp (Seafair Minor Hockey) and # 10 Michael Rose (Seafair Minor Hockey)
  • #10 Michael Rose (Seafair Minor Hockey) assisted by #5 Justin Oertel (North Delta Minor Hockey)
  • #17 Bobby MacLean (Surrey Minor Hockey) unassisted
  • #5 Justin Oertel (North Delta Minor Hockey) unassisted *double overtime winning goal*
The exciting conclusion to the Tournament, came to it's apex with the rewarding of the Earl Sinkie Trophy (The creator of the Trophy and Tournament).

Brek Stewart (Managing Director Juvenile Division for P.C.A.H.A) accompanied by Earl Sinkie presented the Trophy to the Canucks (Coached by Jim Schuck and Maurice Hamlin both of Richmond Minor Hockey). The boys all received their individual gold medals along with the hoisting of the Trophy.
The silver medals handed out to the Senators (Coached by Dan Melanson of Burnaby Winter Club and Derek Chichak of Seafair Minor Hockey)

The closing ceremonies wouldn't have been complete without the presentation of the three five hundred dollar bursaries to the Tournament MVP's.

First the game MVP's were handed out to:

#1 Tyson Leblanc of the Canucks (Representing Seafair Minor Hockey)
#15 Cale Bechtel of the Senators (Representing Abbotsford Minor Hockey)

The Tournament MVP Winners were as follows:

#7 Trevor Yu of the Flames (Representing Vancouver Minor Hockey)
#15 Cale Bechtel of the Senators (Representing Abbotsford Minor Hockey)

Game 2 PCAHA Juvenile Scholarship Tournament

RIDGE MEADOWS DISH

February 8, 2012

Game 2 of the P.C.A.H.A. 30th Annual Juvenile Scholarship Tournament was played at the George Preston Arena in Langley last night. The game featured the 0-1 Flames against the Senators (in their first game).

Both teams played with determination and pressed the goalies hard. A high scoring game which displayed the strength of the forwards at the same time as showing the resolve of the defence and goalies. The Flames coached by Doug Shantz (Coquitlam Minor Hockey) and Jordon Badari (Surrey Minor Hockey) never gave up the fight even after trailing 3-0.  A few quick goals saw the game tied up going into the third period. The goals were scored fast and furious in the third and great plays were being made on both sides. A penalty shot was rewarded to Senators player #8 Billy Allen after he was taken down during a breakaway. Billy fired his shot but goalie #30 Trevor Scheffel stood tall in the net and kept Billy from scoring.

In the end it was the Senators who won 9-4. The Senators who are coached by Derek Chichak (Seafair Minor Hockey) and Dan Melanson (Burnaby Winter Club) will face the Canucks tomorrow night at the North Surrey Rec Centre. Puck drops at 730pm.  Admission is free and programs are available for $2

P.C.A.H.A MIDGET SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT

I had the extreme honor and privilege in being part of the 35th Annual P.C.A.H.A. Midget Scholarship Tournament held this past week.

Having previous experience in organizing tournaments was definitely a bonus in this heavy undertaking. Alot of back ground paperwork, emails, phone calls and faxes that at times seemed overwhelming.  I spent endless hours discussing hockey with my hubby and talking with my mentor on learning different aspects of tournament organizing.

The experience allowed me to travel around the lower mainland from arena to arena and meet people from every walk of life who share a passion for hockey. The boys who participated in the tournament were the 'best of the best' in minor hockey and who exemplified what 'sportsmanship' and 'fair play' are.

I want to congratulate the boys of the Greater Vancouver Avalanche on winning the Championship (this past Sunday in Port Coquitlam) and to the following boys for winning the $500 bursaries.

At the newly renovated (still in renovation mode) Pitt Meadows Arena on Bonson Rd. The game gets under way at 4:45pm and goes until 7:45pm.

The best part is my news! I'm thrilled to announce that the Stomping Ground Coffee House will be the concession vendor on site!!

Providing 'Fair Trade' coffee, teas and fantastic snacks for all the fans!

As it is a temporary location, cash will be the only type of payment available. So be sure to hit up the ATM before heading to the rink.
