ARE YOU READY?

HALLOWEEN SERIES PART 3

Greetings my ghouls and goblins

Halloween wouldn't be Halloween without some excellent 'family' friendly spooky flicks to kick back and enjoy with a bag of popcorn. So, here are a few to check out and make a part of your holiday as well.

Monster Squad circa 1987. What do Frankenstein, Dracula, Werewolf, and a group of dorky tweens have in common? They all found their way into this family friendly flick. Duncan Regehr, Stan Shaw, Tom Noonan and Jack Gwillim as the iconic Van Helsing. In their small tree fort, the "Monster Squad" spends their days flipping through horror comics and dreaming of protecting the earth from the creatures of the night. Their world turns upside down when a curse allows Dracula to roam the earth once more. Only a spell cast by a virgin will save the world and it is up to the Squad to protect the town. Thrills, chills and a 'Creepy old German Guy' make this movie a keeper!

Hocus Pocus circa 1993.  Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker star as the three Sanderson sisters. A brood of witches that run amok amok amok 300 years ago. Max and Dani Dennison are the new kids in Salem Massachusetts are thrust into the clutches of these evil witches. Disney does Horror like no body's business in this musical perfection. Sarah Jessica Parker's voice is pure and dare I say 'angellic' as Sarah the youngest of the sisters. It is crunch time for Max when Dani is kidnapped and her essence needed to keep the witches alive. Special effects, amazing cinematography and delightful scripting give Hocus Pocus the 'adorable' treat to viewers.

Casper circa 1995. A very young Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa star in this blockbuster about a shy ghost who just wants to fit in. Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle bring their comedic brilliance to the big screen. Kat (Ricci) and her dad (Pullman) move into their new home. Problem is, it happens to be haunted by Casper and company. With voices by Brad Garrett, John Kassir and Joe Alaskey. The ghosts aren't moving and either are the living. Havoc, chaos, mayhem and laughter ensue. This is a tear-jerking, tissue grabbing, pillow squishing movie.

Oh Sweet Victim..excerpt from "Blood Stained Talons" (c) 2012

OH SWEET VICTIM

Oh sweet victim of mine,
Come closer child and let me feed on thee.
For I am the seeker of the night,
The desolated ironclad heart.
I am the wanderer of the moon and I am eternal.

Tiny satiny red droplets of life-force
I suckle thee voraciously.
Slipping deeper into the chasm that is your fate.
No voice to call out
In the loud silence of night

I see the fear deep within your soul
It calls to me like a siren to the sea.
Heartless and emotionless I finish my feast
Your flesh my nourishment my joy.

I quench my bloodlust as your breath ceases.
Your body putrid and decaying.
No more will I dine on thee.
Oh sweet victim of mine.

Part 2 Halloween 2012

Our ongoing series for Halloween 2012 continues with a few more movie selections for your grisly viewing.

Creepshow circa 1982. From the demented minds of Stephen King and George A. Romero. It is brilliantly mastered with the perfect balance of blood, guts, gore and fright. Based on the graphic novel by Stephen King, it contains mini vingettes that distort the mind, play with the senses and scare the 'dickens' out of willing viewers. Don't let the humor fool you, this movie is all about the fear factor.

Village of the Damned circa 1960.  In the sleepy village of Midwich, a baby boom of a blond brood proves to be too much for their unsuspecting parents. Their mind-reading skills along with some paranormal deaths will send the viewer's mind reeling and clutching a pillow for dear life. Starring George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and a young Richard Warner.

The Island of Dr Moreau circa 1977.  A beautifully tranquil and remote island shelters the corrupted mind of Dr Moreau (Burt Lancaster). An unsuspecting Andrew Braddock (played superbly by Michael York) falls prey to the island's many inhabitants. Mutations created by the vile Dr in this incredible adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic.

Dreamscape circa 1984. In your dreams you are a superstar, a professional athlete, a god, but what if you could control your dreams and the dreams of others? In this gripping thriller by Joseph Ruben, stars a young Dennis Quaid who has acquired the ability to manipulate his dreams and the dreams of others. Pitted against the equally talented but evil mind of David Patrick Kelly. This movie is a non-stop rollercoaster of thrills and chills. Don't go to sleep....

The City of the Dead circa 1960. A young woman finds her research into witchcraft leads her to the quaint town of Whitewood and the cozy 'Ravens Inn'. Nan Barlow is exquisite against the darkness that is the Master of horror Christopher Lee. Things take a sharp turn into the clutches of the devil himself as the poor girl is 'marked' for sacrifice. Deep plot, outstanding writing and gruesome special effects make this a keeper for any Halloween Collection!

As the droplets of blood fall onto the pristine white floor, so to does this continue onward......

    Raven's Horror Movie Suggestions

It's that time again. To start contemplating your October movie viewing schedule. To help you out this year, I thought I would share some of my favorites.

I'm a die-hard 'B' movie cult classic buff and live for the days of horror movies done in B&W.

    Ready to scream?

    1. Satanic Rites of Dracula circa 1973 with two of the "Masters of Horror" Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. While campy with the cinematography, it is still a great movie to get fans into the horror genre gently.
    2. Salem's Lot circa 1979. The original adaptation from one of my heroes 'Stephen King'. Starring a then hit lister David Soul and the ever stoic and creepy James Mason. Creepy, eerie and the start to a long gloriously gruesome marriage between fiction and film.
    3. When A Stranger Calls circa 1979. Forget the wimpy remake and settle into this classic movie that makes any babysitter leery of a new job.  Starring Charles Durning and Carol Kane, the babysitter finds herself in deep trouble when she is asked 'Have you checked the children'
    4. Halloween 3 Season of The Witch circa 1982.  Forget Mike Myers, Dan O'Herlihy's portrayal of Conal Cochran will send anyone screaming from the room. This ghastly film incorporates the joy of halloween costumes with the grisly demonic overlord wanting to take over the world. John Carpenter is stellar in his direction of this classic.
    5. The Fog circa 1980. John Carpenter is again awesome in his direction of this spooky little movie. Starring Andrienne Barbeau (the mother of all horror actresses) and a little known star Jamie Lee Curtis. The movie is crisp, action packed and leaves your fingernails bleeding from gripping fear.
    6. The Andromeda Strain circa 2008. While the original starring Dan Hill is phenomenal, the remake has the high tech special effects edge that makes it top notch. Starring the sexy Benjamin Bratt, Rick Schoeder and Eric McCormick.  An alien virus quickly starts to spread through rural middle America and it is up to the elite scientific team led by Bratt to find a cure to the mysterious deadly disease. Out of the brilliant mind of Michael Crichton, this is one movie (tv mini-series) not to pass up.
